According to the prophet Daniel, the armies of the Abomination of Desolation (identified as the King of the North) will be staged in or near Israel because of a conflict with a nation recognized as the South.
- At the appointed time he will invade the South again, but this time the outcome will be different from what it was before.
Daniel 11:29 NIV
This conflict will escalate and the Abomination of Desolation will choose to break the covenant …
- Ships of the western coastlands will oppose him, and he will lose heart. Then he will turn back and vent his fury against the holy covenant. He will return and show favor to those who forsake the holy covenant.
Daniel 11:30 NIV
…which he confirmed 3 ½ years earlier.
- And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week, he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.
Daniel 9:27 KJV
With this change of heart, the Abomination of Desolation will order his armies to advance toward Jerusalem.
- His armed forces will rise up to desecrate the temple fortress and will abolish the daily sacrifice. Then they will set up the abomination that causes desolation.
Daniel 11:31 NIV
In its wake, his armies will kill two thirds of the Israeli population in the land of Israel.
- “And it shall come to pass in all the land,” says the Lord, “that two-thirds in it shall be cut off and die, but one-third shall be left in it: ”
Zechariah 13:8 NKJV
Eventually surrounding the metropolitan area of Jerusalem…
- And when ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that the desolation thereof is nigh.
Luke 21:20 KJV
…and the remaining third of the Israeli population (“the Remnant of Israel”).
- I will bring the one-third through the fire, will refine them as silver is refined, and test them as gold is tested. They will call on My name, and I will answer them. I will say, ‘This is My people’; and each one will say, ‘The Lord is my God.’ ”
Zechariah 13:9 NKJV
Then with a detachment of soldiers, the Abomination of Desolation will advance toward, and will forcefully enter, the Third Temple, where he will abolish the temple sacrifices and set himself up as the Most High.
- His armed forces will rise up to desecrate the temple fortress and will abolish the daily sacrifice. Then they will set up the abomination that causes desolation.
Daniel 11:31 NIV
It is at this point “the Remnant” (along with the two witnesses) are instructed to “flee” for the mountain fortress we know as the Old City of Jerusalem.
- So when you see standing in the holy place ‘the abomination that causes desolation,’ spoken of through the prophet Daniel—let the reader understand— then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.
Matthew 24: 15,16 NIV
With this influx of over a million people, the Abomination of Desolation will have no choice but to evacuate Jerusalem and will eventually establish his camp in a location somewhere between the Mediterranean Sea and Jerusalem.
- He will halt between Jerusalem and the sea and there pitch his royal tents, but while he is there his time will suddenly run out, and there will be no one to help him.
Daniel11:45 TLB
After the Abomination evacuates the Old City, his armies will then advance (and occupy) Metropolitan Jerusalem right up to walls of the Old City of Jerusalem.
- But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months.
Revelation 11:2 KJVm
Then The Master will stop the army’s advance by defending the Old City (Mount Zion) and her assemblies with a Pillar of Cloud by day and a Pillar of Fire by night…
- Then the Lord will create above every dwelling place of Mount Zion, and above her assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day and the shining of a flaming fire by night. For over all the glory there will be a covering.
Isaiah 4:5 NKJV
…just as He protected Israel while fleeing from Egypt.
- And the Angel of God, who went before the camp of Israel, moved and went behind them; and the pillar of cloud went from before them and stood behind them. So it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel. Thus it was a cloud and darkness to the one, and it gave light by night to the other, so that the one did not come near the other all that night.
Exodus 14:19-20 NKJV
Protected inside the walls of the Old City will be “the Remnant” …
- And there was given me a reed like unto a rod: and the angel stood, saying, Rise, and measure the temple of The Most High, and the altar, and them that worship therein.
Revelation 11:1 KJVm
…and the Two Witnesses.
- And if any man will hurt them, fire proceedes out of their mouth, and devoures their enemies: and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed.
Revelation 11:5 KJVm
Outside the Old City will be the armies of the Abomination, which will be occupying the rest of the Metropolitan Jerusalem for the 42 months of the Great Tribulation.
- But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months.
Revelation 11:2 KJVm
This is the start of the Great Tribulation period.
